Amputation
Acerca de Amputation
Amputation is the surgical removal of a limb or other body part. It is a common procedure performed by general surgeons and can be done for a variety of reasons, including:
Severe injury or trauma
Infected or gangrenous tissue
Chronic diseases, such as diabetes or peripheral vascular disease
Cancer
The type of amputation performed will depend on the specific reason for the surgery, as well as the patient's individual needs and goals. For example, a patient who needs to have their leg amputated due to a traumatic injury may have a different amputation level than a patient who has diabetes and needs to have their foot amputated due to gangrene.
Our doctors will first assess the patient's medical history and physical condition. They will then discuss the options for amputation with the patient, and help them to choose the best level of amputation for their individual needs. The amputation surgery itself is usually performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon will make an incision in the skin and tissue around the limb, and then remove the limb at the desired level. The surgeon will then close the incision and apply a dressing.
The patient will typically stay in our clinic for a few days after the amputation surgery. They will receive pain medication and antibiotics, and they will begin physical therapy to help them learn how to use their prosthetic limb. The recovery time after amputation surgery varies depending on the type of amputation and the patient's individual circumstances. However, most patients are able to return home within a few weeks. With proper care and rehabilitation, most patients who have amputation surgery are able to live full and active lives
